Falling asleep may seem like an impossible dream when you’re awake at 3 a.m., but good sleep is more under your control than you might think. Following healthy sleep habits can make the difference between restlessness and restful slumber. 

On average, adults should optimally receive between 7 & 9 hours of sleep each night, but those needs vary individually.

Did you know that what you eat and drink, the medications you take, how you schedule your days and how you choose to spend your evenings – can significantly impact your quality of sleep? Even a few slight adjustments can, in some cases, mean the difference between sound sleep and a restless night.

Here are some tips for better sleep quality:

  • Relax before bed. Keep the room quiet & at a comfortable, cool temperature. 
  • Bed is for sleep, not screens. Turn off electronic devices at least 30 minutes before bedtime.
  • Avoid Caffeine, Alcohol, Nicotine, and Other Chemicals that Interfere with Sleep
  • Have a light evening meal. If you are hungry at night, choose a light, healthy snack. 
  • Keep a consistent sleep schedule. Get up at the same time every day, even on weekends or during vacations.
  • Exercise regularly and maintain a healthy diet. 
  • Don’t’ rely on sleeping medications.
